Bring Forgiveness into Your Life
Louise L. Hay is one of my favorite authors. In her book You Can Heal Your Life, she discusses the fallout that results from holding on to resentment: âI had had a very difficult childhood with a lot of abuseâmental, physical and sexual. But that was many years ago, and it was no excuse for the way I was treating myself now. I was literally eating my body with cancerous growth because I had not forgiven.â4
When you are willing to restore love to places in your life where you lost sight of it, you can experience the beauty in yourself, in others and in the world.
I have not found any medical research that proves resentment can cause cancer. However, Hay has been a cancer survivor for decades. I believe she realized that releasing her resentment was instrumental in healing her body.
When you are willing to restore love to places in your life where you lost sight of it, you can experience the beauty in yourself, in others and in the world. Without forgiveness, it is impossible to appreciate your beauty and the essence of who you really are.
Learning to forgive as a way of life replaces your oppressive behavior patterns with positivity. It creates a space in which to build the foundation for feeling beautiful. However, before genuine forgiveness can take root in your heart, you need to clear some debris from the space. It is time to dismantle the origins of your continuing heartbreak and resentment by exposing the negative feelings you hold around your Herstory.
It is normal to feel nervous or even fearful doing these next few exercises. Be gentle with yourself, because self-compassion will make this process much easier. Remember: I let the phone ring 19 times at my parentsâ house before I talked to my father. Do not give up! You are worth the rewards found on the other side of resentment.
If you are at a place where your Herstory no longer weighs heavily on your heart, then it is time to bring forgiveness to the people in your Herstory. If you have not let go of the significance of your Herstory in order to offer forgiveness, it may be helpful to revisit the âRead Through Your Herstoryâ exercise in Chapter 4. Once you have let go of the emotional charge around your Herstory, you are ready to deliver forgiveness.
